An embrace of Love is what you experience when you walk into Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It's as if you are walking into the arms of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A mural adorned with over 4,000 stars depicts the mantle of the Blessed Virgin Mary as distinguished on the original cloak or 'Tilma' of St. Juan Diego which hangs in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. It flows throughout the interior of the church. The stars represent the average number of abortions performed each day since the legalization was established in Roe vs. Wade over thirty years ago. Fifty large stars represent each state in the country. The mural, painted by Artist Jose Ribota was commissioned by Rev. Joe Vigil, pastor of the parish and marked the beginning of a campaign to raise funds for a memorial to the unborn and new gathering center.

The Knights of Columbus Council #13596 sponsored the painting of the fresco as their support. “It was a unanimous decision” stated Jim Garcia, Parish Administrator and brother Knight. “Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness for the Knights. We pray for life and the unborn. Hopefully the mural and life and mercy centers will be an inspiration for other councils throughout the country.”

In November, 2004, a sacred relic image of the virgin was enthroned at the parish by Archbishop Michael J. Sheehan along with special guest, Msgr. Diego Monroy Ponce, Episcopal General and rector of the Basilica in Mexico City. This launched the first Life and Mercy Center in the United States. Authorized by Cardinal Norberto Carrera, Archbishop of Mexico, the relics were created when exact life size replicas of Our Lady of Guadalupe images were touched to the sacred original Tilma in a private ceremony. This was the first formal ceremonial procedure of this kind in more than 472 years.

Parishioners, families and pilgrims nationwide are invited to sponsor a star on the mural, spiritually adopting a holy innocent, pledging to pray for them and for an end to abortion. Each sponsorship aids in the completion of the memorial, gathering space and preservation. Names will be placed in a special album and housed in the church. Masses will be offered for sponsors intentions.
