On May 8, 2004, Bishop Marcelino Hernandez representing Norberto Cardinal Rivera Carrera, Archbishop of Mexico, launched the International Life and Mercy Crusade (an entity of Life Foundation Ministries) from Mexico City with images of Our Lady of Guadalupe that have been touched to the miraculous Tilma of St. Juan Diego. In addition, replicas of the original image of The Divine Mercy were blessed under the sacred Tilma on Divine Mercy Sunday 2004 for this Crusade.
As the images of Guadalupe were touched to the sacred original, Monsignor Diego Monroy Ponce, rector of the Basilica declared “These are now the official authorized relics of evangelization that carry the very same graces as the miraculous image.” The Monsignor individually signed each image ‘touched to the sacred original for the International Life and Mercy Crusade, May 8, 2004.’
At least one of these relic images of Guadalupe and the blessed image of The Divine Mercy will be placed in every country to fulfill Pope John Paul IIís Prophecy in 1979 when he stated “From the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the light of the gospel of Christ will illuminate the entire world by means of the miraculous image of His Mother.”
The relics were created when exact size replicas of Our Lady of Guadalupe images were touched to the sacred original Tilma on April 20, 2004 under the direction of Msgr. Diego Monroy Ponce for the International Life and Mercy Crusade at the Basilica in Mexico City. This was the first formal ceremonial procedure of this kind in more than 472 years.
Monsignor Diego Monroy Ponce, Rector of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico City, stated, “The International Life and Mercy crusade has the intentions of giving this gift of the Relic Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe to the world to promote Life and to have the presence of Mercy.” He further said, “She is the ambassador of the good news of salvation.”
Most Rev. Michael J. Sheehan, Archbishop of Santa Fe, New Mexico launched the International Life and Mercy Crusade for the United states in Albuquerque on November 21, 2004 and stated “The Crusade brings the Truth of Christ the King through His Holy Mother Mary.”
In the summer of 2005 these two sacred images were placed in Milford Center Ohio, just 35 minutes from Columbus Ohio. Father Pat Toner of Saint Joseph Parish in the Diocese of Columbus took on the great task of protecting and pasturing this wonderful chapel in the country. Father Toner made the decision in June of 2008 to move the relic image and the Divine Mercy image to Saint Joseph in Plain City in order to restore the old Chapel in Milford Center, with hopes of moving the Chapel to Plain City.
